Where to stay on the South Downs Way, night by night

Nine days, eight nights on the way. Most nights have a handful of places within reach; three have one or two, and those are the ones to book first.

By Tom Spencer ·

The planner's default split for the South Downs Way is nine days, walking west to east from Winchester to Eastbourne. That makes eight nights on the way, and the beds for them are not spread evenly. Some stops have a village of inns and guest houses; others have a single pub with rooms.

Two lists are counted below. The first is the National Trail's own accommodation list, read 23 September 2026: 128 places, 124 of which we could place by postcode. For each night we count the places on it within 2.5 km of the stop. The second is OpenStreetMap, read 19 September 2026, which picks up some places the list does not, and misses some it has. Neither is a booking check: a place on a list is not a room on your night. We have not phoned anyone.

Night by night

In the planner's nine-day split, with a bed and breakfast each night:

  • Night 1, Meonstoke (12.2 miles from Winchester). Five places on the list, the nearest Crossways B&B at Exton, then the Bucks Head Inn and Dairy Cottage Annexe, all within about a kilometre.
  • Night 2, Clanfield (11.2 miles). One place on the list, the Hampshire Hog, 0.7 km off the path. OpenStreetMap has the same one and no other. Book this night first.
  • Night 3, Bepton (11.6 miles). Two on the list, Park House Hotel & Spa at 1.6 km and Moonlight Cottage Guest House at 2.1 km. Both are well off the path, there and back. Book this one early too.
  • Night 4, Houghton Bridge (12.5 miles). Five on the list, among them Arun Valley B&B and the South Downs Bunkhouse; OpenStreetMap adds Amberley Castle, 0.7 km off the path.
  • Night 5, Washington (6.8 miles, the short day). Five on the list: Holt House 0.2 km away, Swipes Farm and Washcamp. OpenStreetMap has none here at all, which is why we count both.
  • Night 6, Poynings (12.7 miles). Six on the list: Saddlescombe Farm Campsite by the path, and Letterbox B&B and South Downs Way B&B about a kilometre off.
  • Night 7, Falmer (9.7 miles). Two on the list, and only one is a bed indoors: the Grain Store Lewes, 0.7 km from the stop. The other is Housedean Farm Campsite. The third night to book early.
  • Night 8, Alfriston (14.2 miles, the longest day). Eight on the list, the most of any night; the George Inn, Ye Olde Smugglers Inne and the Star Inn are all within 0.1 km of the path.

Day 9 is 10.7 miles from Alfriston into Eastbourne.

So the pinch is early and late: Clanfield and Bepton in the first three nights, and Falmer near the end. If one of them is full, the planner will move the night: change the number of days, or open a day and pick another stop, and it shows what is listed near the new one.

Hostels and bunkhouses

The Trail's list has six places it calls hostels or bunkhouses near the path: a cabin at Meonstoke, Wetherdown Lodge near East Meon, Gumber Bothy near Slindon, the South Downs Bunkhouse at Houghton, YHA Truleigh Hill and YHA South Downs at Beddingham. Between Wetherdown and Gumber Bothy there are none, 24 miles of ridge, so a hostel walk has to take a B&B or a long day in the middle. The planner's hostel setting stops at them where it can.

What the lists will not tell you

Whether a place takes one-night stays in summer, has single rooms, takes dogs or will take a bag from a luggage transfer: none of it is on either list, and we have not asked. Those are the questions to ask when you book. The planner's day cards count each night's places on both lists, and its booking checklist puts the thinnest nights at the top.
