Where to stay on Hadrian's Wall Path, night by night
Seven days, six nights, and one of them, at Carrawburgh, has a single place listed near it. That is the night to book first; the rest have four to eleven.
By Tom Spencer ·
The planner's default split for Hadrian's Wall Path is seven days, walking east to west from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway. That makes six nights on the way. Five of them have a handful of places listed nearby or more; one has a single place, and that is the night to book first.
Two lists are counted below. The first is the National Trail's own accommodation list, read 23 September 2026: 296 places, 282 of which we could place by postcode. For each night we count the places on it within 2.5 km of the stop. The second is OpenStreetMap, read 19 September 2026. Neither is a booking check: a place on a list is not a room on your night, and we have not phoned anyone.

Night by night
In the planner's seven-day split, with a bed and breakfast each night:
- Night 1, Newburn (11.4 miles from Wallsend). Four places on the list, the nearest The Keelman's Lodge, 0.3 km off the path.
- Night 2, the Matfen Hall stop (11.5 miles). The planner names this stop after a hotel on OpenStreetMap, 3 km away; the stop itself is 1.2 km off the path. Six on the list, the nearest Wallhouses South Farm Cottage at 1.2 km.
- Night 3, Carrawburgh (12.4 miles). One place on the list, Carraw Farm's self-catering, 0.4 km away, and nothing on OpenStreetMap. Book this night first, or move it.
- Night 4, Walltown Crags (13 miles). Eleven on the list, among them three hostels; Walltown Lodge is 0.2 km off the path.
- Night 5, Walton (11.4 miles). Eight on the list: Florrie's on the Wall, which OpenStreetMap has as a bunkhouse and B&B, and the Old Vicarage and Greenacres, all within 0.2 km.
- Night 6, Stainton (13.4 miles, the longest day). Seven on the list, the nearest Vallum House Hotel, 0.4 km off the path.
Day 7 is 12.4 miles to Bowness-on-Solway.
If Carrawburgh is full, the planner will move the night: change the number of days, or open a day and pick another stop, and it shows what is listed near the new one.
Hostels and bunkhouses
The Trail's list has 26 places it calls hostels or bunkhouses, from Newcastle's backpacker hostels near the start to bunkhouses at Birdoswald, Greenhead and Walton. With the planner set to hostels, its split sleeps at Gateshead, Rudchester, Frankham, Haltwhistle, Walton and Carlisle; some of those are off the path, and Frankham is thin.
What the lists will not tell you
Whether a place takes one-night stays in summer, has single rooms, takes dogs or will take a bag from a luggage transfer: none of it is on either list, and we have not asked. Those are the questions to ask when you book. The planner's day cards count each night's places on both lists, and its booking checklist puts the thinnest nights at the top.

Mostly level walking along a chalk scarp, with short steep climbs where it drops and rises again. The hard part is water: two stretches of more than thirty miles with no tap on the map.
